Welcome to an exciting school year. This is my fourth year teaching 5th grade, and I teach Reading, Math, and Writing Class. What is happening in my classes so far this year? Take a look below.
Homeroom Students:There have been many papers sent home this week that needed to be signed. The following papers need to be turned in ASAP!
- Blue Emergency Cards
- Bus Cards
- The last 2 pages of the 08/09 Student Handbook this year
- 08/09 Fifth Grade Student Contract
- Cafeteria Forms for free/reduced lunch
- PCA School Improvement Form
**Parents, keep an eye out each week for the "Thursday Folder". This folder will keep you informed on school events as well as any graded papers your child has received thus far. Other papers that need to be signed will be found in this folder as well.
Reading: This week in my reading class, we will be reading the story "Earthquake Terror". We will be learning new vocabulary, filling in event maps, sequencing, and sharpening our comprehension skills.
Math: We will be starting our multiplication fluency called "Monkey Island Math". Students will be taking a timed multiplication test 3 times a week. As the students grow stronger in their fluency skills, their monkey will be traveling up a tree in the classroom. Each time your child masters a fluency level, he or she will receive a sticker on his/her monkey. ***Help your child out by practicing multiplication at home every night. This will greatly help your child throughout the school year.
We will also be diving into chapter 1 of our text book. We are going to begin with place value through the billions. In this chapter we will be looking at standard form, expanded form, and written form of numbers. We will also be working on rounding numbers, comparing and ordering numbers, and place value in decimals.
Writing: We already have the ball rolling in this class! Last Wednesday, each child received the week's spelling words. These words come from the story "Earthquake Terror" in the reading text book. You will find a complete list of spelling words stapled in your child's agenda book as well as in the back of the Practice Book on page 265. Each week, there are 4 assignments that accompany the spelling words. There are 5 times each, and 3 Practice Book pages. As students are assigned homework, it will be due the next day. The work is posted on my homework board. This week's first spelling test is Wednesday, September 3.
We have also began some grammar activities. Last week we worked with short vowels and base words. This week we will be reviewing base words, working with synonyms, kinds of sentences, and subjects and predicates.
**I want to thank all of my homeroom parents for supplying me with paper towels, tissues, cleaning wipes, and hand sanitizer for the year. Your donations are appreciated and very helpful. If there are any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to email me. Email is my easiest way to communicate, however phone calls are welcome too.
I look forward to working with your child this year and making him or her as successful as I possibly can!
