March Madness!

Hello! Happy March everyone! I hope that this finds everyone well. Here is what's is going to happen after we finish DSTP testing...

Math: We are going back to FRACTIONS! We will be discussing fractions and mixed numbers on a number line, understanding equivalent fractions, making equivalent fractions, discussing and figuring out greatest common factors, fractions in simplest form... and more! We are still continuing with "Monkey Island Math" 3 times a week. Keep helping your child learn his/her facts.

Reading: We are beginning Theme 4: Person to Person. In this theme, we will be reading several stories that show how people work together. The first story we will read to kick off the theme is "Mariah Keeps Cool". We will be working on comprehension, vocabulary, and problems and solutions.

Writing: We are going to begin our next writing piece. Students are going to be writing a persuasive essay to Mrs. Erschen suggesting a fun 5th grade picnic at the end of the school year. Students are going to have to come up with the location, what the students will wear, what the cafeteria will serve, and what activities the students will participate in. We will be focusing on writing well quality paragraphs that have an introduction and conclusion sentence in each. We will also work on writing good introduction and good conclusion paragraphs. ***SPELLING WILL RESUME MARCH 24. The list will come from the story "Dear Mr. Henshaw".

What's coming up...
-Wednesday, March 17: Jeans and Greens Day for St. Patrick's Day. Students can pay $3.00 and wear jeans and a green shirt. Proceeds go to the yearbook.
-Report cards go home on Wednesday, March 24, 2010.
-Spring Break.... No School Friday, April 2 to Sunday, April 11. School resumes on Monday, April 12.
-I still need tissues, paper towels, and disinfecting wipes for the classroom.
-I also need candy for candy jar, and goodies for my "Chance Box". These are used for rewards, and if you can help me out, I'd appreciate it.
